Different Certifications

As there are so many certifications and is hard to understand them all, we thought we would explain the different certifications and how each one works. Hopefully this will give you a full understanding of them and if necessary you may want your company to join one of them.

RAINFOREST ALLIANCE

Their Mission

  • The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour.
  • Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our programmes meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods.

Their Approach

  • At the Rainforest Alliance, they believe that the key to ensuring long and healthy lives for people, for wildlife and for the planet is by establishing sustainable ways of working the land.
  • By creatively and systematically helping to overhaul the way that crops and timber are produced and the way tourism is managed, the Rainforest Alliance, its partners and the consumers they serve are ensuring that the resources we depend on today will be here far into the future.

How They Do It

  • By connecting conservation to your life! The Rainforest Alliance Certified seal of approval makes it easy for consumers to know they are buying a product that has been grown or made sustainably. The companies who sell these products also make sure their customers know they are good neighbours in their communities and that they take care of their workers and protect the environment.

At the Rainforest Alliance their work is guided by these core values:
    • Respect and concern for natural environments, local peoples and all stakeholders
    • Dedication to pioneering pragmatic innovations with respect to common practices
    • A belief that sustainability is achievable only through collaboration and mutual success
    • An unwavering commitment to integrity in all that they do

UTZ CERTIFIED & CARGILL

  • The UTZ Certified ‘Good Inside' cocoa programme implements a credible certification and traceability system for mainstream cocoa to ensure that the industry and consumers know that the cocoa is produced in a sustainable, responsible and safe way.
  • UTZ Certified ‘Good Inside' cocoa programme was launched in 2008 in Côte d'Ivoire.
  • In September 2009, after an independent audit, the first co-operatives received certification. The first UTZ Certified cocoa and chocolate became available in March 2010.
  • In 2010, 300 farmer field schools will train 10,000 cocoa farmers in 35 farming co-operatives, resulting in 10,000Mt of sustainably grown cocoa.
  • UTZ Certified is designed as a mainstream model that seeks to implement a worldwide certification and traceability programme for responsible commodity production and sourcing.
  • The steering members of the ‘Good Inside' cocoa programme are UTZ Certified, Cargill, ECOM Agro industrial, Heinz, Ahold, Mars and Nestle.
  • Producers don't pay any membership fee to UTZ CERTIFIED, they carry the costs of compliance and certification. For members, there is a membership fee for the first years of the programme while it is scaling up a lot. Afterwards it will be replaced by a volume based fee for the cocoa that is bought as UTZ CERTIFIED. The income from the membership fee is invested in capacity building in origin. Later on the income from the fee will be used for programme management, the maintenance of the online traceability system,  marketing & communications. They have the goal to be self-financing and they have achieved this goal in the coffee programme.
